Carla Oberholzer

Carla Oberholzer – 2019 African Games TTT Gold, SA Road Cyclist

Demacon Ladies Team

After sustaining a gymnastic career-ending injury, Carla’s cycle-loving family made her move to a bicycle an obvious choice.  She admits that while this wasn’t love-at-first-ride, she found herself hooked after she started to win junior races. Following a five-year break to complete her physiotherapist qualification, Carla took up cycling again with her now-husband, Stefan, and hasn’t looked back.

As a well-decorated cyclist, Carla finds her motivation from ordinary people doing ordinary daily tasks with passion and joy, despite their struggles, such as the petrol-attendant who is “very-well”.

The long 4 to 5 hour rides in Zone 2 on her local roads around Clarens, particularly the Golden Gate Highlands National Park make Carla happy.  She also enjoys venturing out a bit further into the Sabie, Graskop and Nelspruit area for a change of scenery.

Despite her ability to bake (and eat) an impressive carrot cake, Carla choses to fuel her cycling with Cadence Nutrition…it’s much easier to pack into your pockets!  She will typically mimic her race day nutrition for her longer metabolic efforts, and use a Cadence Classic Energy Gel before setting off and another one, 1 hour in – together with 2 x 500ml bottles of CarboFuel.  Of course, Cadence Revive is essential to aid her recovery, along with some Protein Fuel before bed.

For Carla, it’s important to know that one of the most important aspects of her cycling career, on-bike nutrition, is 100% reliable.  “I have peace of mind about what goes into the product and therefore into my body.  I know that optimal, up-to-date scientific formulas are used to give me the best chance of being my best.”
